Metering Panels and Consumer Mains
Most switchboard upgrades require a new metering panel to house the smart meter and network isolation equipment. As Level 2 ASPs, we replace the consumer mains at the same time — the main cables running from the street to your board — so the entire installation is rated for the new load and compliant with distributor standards. What Affects the Cost of a Switchboard Upgrade
No two Sydney meter boxes are the same, which is why we quote after an on-site assessment rather than over the phone. These are the six things that move a switchboard upgrade quote up or down:
- Board size and number of circuitsA small single-phase board with a handful of circuits is a shorter job than a large home or commercial board where every circuit needs its own breaker or RCBO, testing and labelling.
- Asbestos backing boardMany older Sydney meter boxes have an asbestos-cement panel behind the fuses. It has to be identified and handled safely and appropriately rather than disturbed, which adds steps to the job.
- Condition of the consumer mainsIf the cables from the street to your board are undersized, damaged or non-compliant, they need replacing at the same time. This is Level 2 work and the biggest single variable on most quotes.
- Level 2 network workAnything on the supply side — the point of attachment, service fuse, network isolation or a supply increase — involves Ausgrid, Endeavour Energy or Essential Energy and only a Level 2 ASP can do it.
- Metering changesA new metering panel, meter relocation, separate metering for a granny flat or a bi-directional solar meter each add scope, and some steps sit with your retailer's metering provider rather than us.
- Single-phase to three-phaseConverting to three-phase for ducted air conditioning, EV charging or a workshop means new mains, a three-phase board and a network application, so it is a larger project than a like-for-like board swap.

What affects the cost of a switchboard upgrade in Sydney?
The main drivers are the size of the board and number of circuits, whether the meter box has an asbestos backing board, the condition of the consumer mains, any Level 2 network work on the supply side, metering changes such as a new panel or solar meter, and whether you are converting from single-phase to three-phase. Do I need a Level 2 electrician for a switchboard upgrade?
