Ausgrid Explained: Sydney's Eastern & Northern Network

By Sydney Power GroupLevel 2 ASP Knowledge Centre 8 min read

If your property is in the Eastern Suburbs, the Inner West, the North Shore, the Northern Beaches, the Central Coast or the Hunter, chances are your electricity network is owned and operated by Ausgrid. Ausgrid is the distributor — it owns the poles, wires, substations and connection points — and it is one of three network operators a Level 2 ASP works across in NSW. Knowing who your distributor is matters, because it determines the rules, applications and connection standards that apply to your job.

Who Ausgrid Is

Ausgrid is the distribution network service provider (DNSP) responsible for the electricity network across a large part of eastern and northern NSW. It is important to understand the distinction between your distributor and your retailer: your retailer is the company that sends your bill and sells you the energy, while Ausgrid owns and maintains the physical infrastructure that delivers it.

You can choose your retailer, but you can't choose your distributor — it is fixed by where your property is located. That is why the same Level 2 work can involve different applications and standards depending on which network your address falls in.

The Areas Ausgrid Covers

Ausgrid's network covers eastern and northern Sydney, the Central Coast and the Hunter region. In Sydney that includes the CBD and Eastern Suburbs, the Inner West, the Lower and Upper North Shore, the Northern Beaches and parts of the north-west. Beyond Sydney it extends north through the Central Coast to Newcastle, Lake Macquarie and the wider Hunter.

If your property sits west of roughly the Parramatta and Blue Mountains line, you are more likely to be on the Endeavour Energy network instead, and regional NSW is served by Essential Energy. Your Level 2 ASP will confirm your exact distributor from your address before quoting or lodging any applications.

What a Level 2 ASP Does on the Ausgrid Network

A Level 2 ASP accredited for Ausgrid can carry out network-side work throughout the Ausgrid area: new overhead and underground service connections, network connections for new builds, service upgrades and relocations, private pole installation, metering work, and disconnections and reconnections.

The ASP prepares and lodges the connection applications with Ausgrid, works to Ausgrid's connection standards and the NSW Service and Installation Rules, and makes the physical connection to the Ausgrid network. Sydney Power Group holds current ASP accreditation across all three NSW networks, so we can service Ausgrid areas from the Eastern Suburbs to the North Shore without handing the network connection to a subcontractor.

Defect Notices on the Ausgrid Network

Ausgrid inspects installations and issues defect notices when it finds electrical work that doesn't meet the required standard — a failing point of attachment, undersized consumer mains, a non-compliant meter position or a safety issue with the service. Defect notices are graded by severity, and the most serious can lead to disconnection if not fixed within the stated timeframe.

Because rectifying a network-side defect is Level 2 work, an Ausgrid defect notice usually needs an accredited provider to make it right. A Level 2 ASP will assess the notice, carry out the rectification, and confirm compliance so the notice is cleared and your supply stays connected.

Getting Connected to Ausgrid

For a new connection, an upgrade or a relocation on the Ausgrid network, the process runs through your ASP: site assessment, connection application to Ausgrid, metering arrangement, the physical works, and the live connection. Because Ausgrid covers such a large and varied area — dense inner-city terraces, harbourside homes, Central Coast estates and Hunter industrial sites — the right connection method varies from job to job, and an experienced ASP will recommend the approach Ausgrid will accept for your address.

Frequently Asked Questions

What areas does Ausgrid cover?+

Ausgrid covers eastern and northern Sydney — including the CBD, Eastern Suburbs, Inner West, North Shore and Northern Beaches — along with the Central Coast and the Hunter region around Newcastle and Lake Macquarie.

Is Ausgrid my electricity retailer?+

No. Ausgrid is your distributor — it owns and maintains the poles, wires and network. Your retailer is the company that bills you for energy. You can choose your retailer, but your distributor is fixed by your location.

How do I know if I'm on the Ausgrid network?+

It depends on your address. Properties in eastern and northern Sydney, the Central Coast and the Hunter are generally on Ausgrid, while western Sydney is usually Endeavour Energy and regional NSW is Essential Energy. A Level 2 ASP can confirm your distributor from your address.

Can a Level 2 ASP connect me to the Ausgrid network?+

Yes, if they hold current Ausgrid ASP accreditation. Sydney Power Group is accredited across all three NSW networks and can carry out new connections, upgrades, relocations, metering and disconnections in Ausgrid areas.

I've received an Ausgrid defect notice — what do I do?+

Have it assessed by a Level 2 ASP. Network-side defects such as a failing point of attachment or undersized mains must be rectified by an accredited provider, who will fix the issue and confirm compliance so the notice is cleared.

What happens if I ignore an Ausgrid defect notice?+

Defect notices carry timeframes based on severity, and the most serious can lead to disconnection of your supply if not rectified in time. It is best to arrange a Level 2 ASP promptly.

Who owns the poles and wires on the Ausgrid network?+

Ausgrid owns and maintains the network infrastructure — the poles, wires, substations and connection points — up to the point of attachment on your property. Your consumer mains from that point are your responsibility.
