How Mains End Up Undersized
Nobody installs undersized mains on purpose — homes outgrow them. Mains put in decades ago were sized for the appliances of the time. Since then the same cables have picked up ducted air conditioning, an induction cooktop, a heat pump, maybe a pool and an EV charger. The cable didn't change; the load tripled.

What Undersized Cable Actually Does
A cable carrying more current than it was sized for produces heat along its entire length — inside walls, under floors, through the roof. Heat ages insulation, and aged insulation is how faults and fires start. Unlike a faulty appliance, you can't unplug a hot cable in the wall.
Undersized mains also cause voltage drop under load: lights that dim when the air con compressor kicks in, appliances that underperform, electronics that reset. The Knock-On Risks
Undersized mains block upgrades. EV charger installers, solar installers and air conditioning contractors assess the supply before connecting major new load — and mains at their limit mean the answer is no until they're upgraded. Networks can also issue a defect notice on deteriorated or non-compliant mains, putting the work on their timeline instead of yours.
And because consumer mains sit on the customer's side of the connection point, they're the homeowner's responsibility to maintain — including where they're damaged, sun-perished overhead, or degraded underground.
