Consumer mains are the cables that run from the network's point of supply — whether overhead from the street or underground from the pit — into your property's metering panel and main switchboard. They are one of the most critical components in your property's electrical infrastructure, and replacing them is exclusively Level 2 ASP work. When Do Consumer Mains Need Replacing?

Consumer mains installed before the mid-1990s were often rated for the loads of that era — not for modern air conditioning, EV chargers, and solar installations. Common reasons for replacement include: ageing insulation that has become brittle and cracked; undersized cables that run hot under normal load; storm or vehicle damage to overhead service cables; and defect notices from Ausgrid or Endeavour Energy identifying non-compliant cable ratings or deterioration. Overhead Consumer Mains

Overhead consumer mains run from the network's service attachment point on your property — either a power pole or a bracket on the building — to your external meter box. These cables are exposed to UV radiation, heat cycles, and physical stress from wind loading, which causes the insulation to degrade faster than underground cables. Underground Consumer Mains

Underground consumer mains run from the network's underground pit or pillar to your property's meter box via a conduit. Where existing underground cables are rated below current network requirements or have been damaged by excavation, tree roots, or moisture ingress, we carry out the full replacement including conduit reinstatement, pit connections, and metering panel work. Where a switchboard upgrade is being carried out simultaneously, we replace the underground consumer mains as part of the same engagement.

Mains Upgrade for Load Increases

If you are adding a significant new load — a large solar array, a battery storage system, or multiple EV chargers — and your existing consumer mains are not rated for the combined demand, we replace the mains with correctly rated cables as part of the supply upgrade scope. This ensures your infrastructure is compliant and your main fuse is not running near its rated capacity under normal load conditions.
