The service fuse — also called the network fuse or street fuse — is the overcurrent protection device installed by the network distributor on the supply side of your consumer mains. It is physically located on the power pole, in an underground pit, or in a pillar box at the boundary of your property. When it fails, your property loses all power completely. Replacing it is exclusively Level 2 ASP work — a standard electrician cannot legally touch it. Sydney Power Group replaces service fuses across Greater Sydney under Ausgrid and Endeavour Energy authorisation, 24 hours a day.
Why Has My Service Fuse Blown?
A service fuse blows when the demand on your consumer mains exceeds its rated capacity, or when there is a fault in the consumer mains cable itself. Common causes include a short circuit in the consumer mains cable (often from moisture ingress, physical damage, or deteriorated insulation), a sustained overload from new high-draw loads such as multiple air conditioning units, EV chargers, or pool equipment added without a supply upgrade, or simply age-related failure in older fuse carriers that have been operating at or near their rated capacity for decades. A blown service fuse is not always an indication of a problem with your internal wiring — it often signals a consumer mains fault that needs to be diagnosed before the fuse is replaced.

The Replacement Process
Before replacing a blown service fuse, a Level 2 ASP must carry out a full assessment of the consumer mains to confirm the cable is fault-free and rated for the fuse size being installed. If the mains cable has a fault, replacing the fuse without rectifying it will cause immediate re-strike. We test the full consumer mains circuit, identify and rectify any fault, replace the fuse carrier with a correctly rated unit, and restore supply. All work is carried out under our Ausgrid and Endeavour Energy authorisation, with a compliance notification lodged on completion.

Service Fuse Upgrades
Where a supply upgrade is being carried out — increasing from a 63A single-phase supply to a 100A or 200A service, or converting from single-phase to three-phase — the existing service fuse must be replaced with a correctly rated unit to match the new supply capacity. We coordinate the fuse upgrade with Ausgrid or Endeavour Energy as part of the supply upgrade application, ensuring the complete supply infrastructure from the network connection point through to your switchboard is compliant at the new rating.
