METER CONSOLIDATION

METER CONSOLIDATION

Level 2 ASP · Metering Specialists

Converted two flats back into one home? Merged two shops into one tenancy? Bought a property that inherited three meters and three bills? Meter consolidation combines multiple metered supplies into a single meter and account — removing the redundant meters, closing off their NMIs, and consolidating the wiring behind them. It's part metering work, part network paperwork, and Sydney Power Group handles both as a Level 2 ASP.

Why Redundant Meters Cost You Money

Every active meter carries its own NMI and its own daily supply charge — often a few hundred dollars a year for a meter serving circuits you could feed from the main supply. Old redundant meters — including retired off-peak meters — also clutter the panel, complicate switchboard upgrades and confuse solar and EV charger installs. Consolidating down to one meter removes the ongoing charge and simplifies everything that comes after.

How Consolidation Works

We survey what each meter actually feeds, design the consolidated arrangement, then rewire the retained circuits onto the primary supply with correct protection. The redundant meters are removed and their NMIs abolished through the retailer and network so the supply charges stop — the step DIY approaches miss, leaving owners billed for meters that no longer exist. Panel and metering alteration works are completed and certified as part of the job.

When NOT to Consolidate

If a space might be re-let separately again — a granny flat, a second shopfront, a future dual occupancy — abolishing its meter can be a decision you pay to reverse later, because re-establishing a supply means a new connection application. In those cases keeping the meter, or planning separate metering properly, is often smarter. We'll flag this honestly during the site visit rather than consolidate by default.

Advice on keeping versus consolidating meters

Typical Consolidation Projects

Common jobs include semis converted to single dwellings, shop-and-residence properties brought under one account, deceased-estate homes with decades of accumulated meters, and multi-tenancy buildings being reconfigured. If the whole supply is being removed instead — say before demolition — that's an abolishment, which we also handle. Send a photo of your meter panel to get started: 0466 125 125 or the contact page.
