Smoke Coming From Switchboard

Smoke coming from your switchboard is a critical emergency and a clear fire risk. Smoke means components are burning or severely overheating behind the panel, and it demands immediate, safety-first action. Sydney Power Group (SPG) is a Level 2 ASP on call 24/7 across Greater Sydney.

If you see smoke or flames, call 000 immediately and get everyone out. If it is safe to do so, switch off the power at the main switch. Do not open, touch or investigate the switchboard. Once safe, call SPG on 0466 125 125.

Get Everyone Out First

Smoke from a switchboard can precede a fire within seconds. Prioritise people — evacuate and call 000. Only if it's safe and you can reach it without risk, turn off the main switch to cut power. Never open the board or throw water at it.

This is more severe than a buzzing switchboard or a burning smell from switchboard — smoke means act now. It parallels smoke coming from meter box, where the same fire-first rules apply.

After the Fire Is Out

Once the immediate danger is controlled and the fire service (if attending) clears the area, our electricians confirm isolation and assess the damage. A smoking board is almost always beyond a simple repair and needs replacement to be safe.
