On the Essential Energy network the service mains are the conductors that carry supply from the point of connection to your point of attachment — and on rural and fringe properties that run can be long, cross several private poles and end well back from the road. Sydney Power Group is an Essential Energy authorised Level 2 ASP that installs and replaces overhead and underground service mains right across the Essential footprint, from regional centres to the semi-rural edge of Sydney.

Long Spans Across Rural Blocks

A metro service mains is often a short drop from the street pole to the eaves. On Essential country, the same job can mean spanning a paddock across several private poles before it reaches the dwelling. Those long overhead spans need correctly sized conductor, proper tension and clearances, and sound poles to carry them. We survey the run, specify the conductor and pole positions, and install the overhead service mains so it meets Essential Energy standards and stands up to wind, sun and stock. Where poles are ageing we can renew them as part of the same visit.

Going Underground On Larger Properties

On larger blocks — and where owners want the poles and wires gone for good — an underground service line is often the better answer. Bigger properties mean longer trenches, so planning the route around septic, water and driveways matters. We trench, lay conduit, pull the cable and terminate the underground service mains, then coordinate the connection with Essential Energy. It is more work up front than an overhead span, but it removes the ongoing exposure of private poles to weather and bushfire on the Essential network.

Connecting To SWER And Rural Feeders

Much of the Essential network beyond the towns runs on single-wire earth-return (SWER) and long rural feeders, which have their own connection requirements. As an authorised Level 2 ASP we know how the service mains ties in at these connection points and how to size the run for the distances involved. Whether it is a new network connection for a rural build or a replacement of a perished old service line, we handle the design, the install and the coordination with Essential.

Replacing A Tired Old Service Line

Decades of sun and weather perish the insulation on old service mains, and a failing service line is a frequent trigger for an Essential Energy defect notice.
