When your safety switch or circuit breaker keeps tripping, it's telling you something is wrong. Resetting it over and over without finding the cause is like silencing a smoke alarm and going back to sleep. The good news is that with a bit of methodical testing you can often narrow down the culprit yourself — and know when the problem is on the network side and needs a Level 2 ASP like Sydney Power Group.
The Most Common Culprit: a Faulty Appliance
By far the most frequent cause of a tripping safety switch is a single faulty appliance leaking current to earth. Kettles, toasters, old fridges, washing machines and outdoor equipment are common offenders, especially as they age.
To find it: switch everything off at the wall, reset the tripped switch, then turn appliances back on one at a time. When the switch trips again, you've found the offender. Stop using that appliance and have it repaired or replaced.
Overloaded Circuits
If a breaker trips when you run several high-draw appliances at once — say a heater, kettle and dryer on the same circuit — you may simply be drawing more current than that circuit is rated for. Spreading the load across different circuits can help in the short term.
If overloading happens regularly, it's a sign your home's electrical capacity hasn't kept pace with how you use it. That's often solved with a switchboard upgrade or, for larger homes, a supply upgrade to three phase.
Moisture, Water Damage and Wiring Faults
Water and electricity don't mix. Rain getting into an outdoor powerpoint, a leaking roof near wiring, or moisture in an old light fitting can all cause nuisance tripping, particularly after Sydney storms. Damaged or degraded cable insulation does the same.
These faults can be intermittent and hard to trace, and they should always be investigated by a licensed electrician rather than ignored.
When to Call for Help
If you can't isolate the cause, if the whole property loses power, or if tripping is accompanied by a burning smell, buzzing or hot switches, treat it as urgent. Problems at the point of connection or on the service fuse are Level 2 ASP work. For fast help across Greater Sydney, call our emergency team on 0466 125 125.
