Power Outage? What to Do Before the Electrician Arrives

By Sydney Power GroupPublished 12 May 2026 5 min read

A sudden loss of power is one of the most common reasons for an emergency callout, and it can come from causes ranging from a simple tripped switch to a fallen network line. A few quick checks can help us diagnose and fix the issue faster once we arrive.

Safety First

If you can see a fallen power line, sparking, or smoke, stay well clear, keep others away, and call 000 immediately — this takes priority over calling an electrician. Never attempt to move a fallen line or anything touching it, even with an insulated object.

Quick Checks You Can Safely Do

Check if neighbours also have power — if it's a street-wide outage, it's a network issue that your distributor is already aware of, not something an electrician can fix on the spot. Check your switchboard for a tripped main switch or safety switch; if one has tripped, try resetting it once, but if it trips again immediately, leave it off and call us rather than repeatedly resetting it.

If only part of your home has lost power, check whether it's isolated to one circuit — this often points to a specific fault rather than a full supply failure.

When to Call an Emergency Electrician

If your switchboard shows signs of damage, the outage is isolated to your property while neighbours have power, or a reset safety switch won't hold, it's time to call. Our emergency callout team responds around the clock across Sydney and can usually attend within the hour for genuine emergencies.
