How EV Chargers Affect Your Switchboard

Charging an electric vehicle at home draws far more power than almost any other appliance, and older Sydney switchboards weren't designed with that load in mind. Before an EV charger goes in, it's worth understanding what it demands of your switchboard and supply — and where a Level 2 ASP comes into the picture for any network-side upgrade.

The Load an EV Charger Adds

A typical home wall charger runs at 7kW on a single-phase supply, which is roughly the equivalent of running several electric ovens continuously for hours. That's a substantial, sustained load added on top of everything else the house is already doing in the evening. Curious what that does to the bill? Your switchboard has to accommodate a dedicated circuit for the charger, protected by its own breaker and (in most cases) a dedicated RCD. If your board is already full or uses old-style ceramic fuses, there's simply nowhere to add it safely without an upgrade.

Does Your Switchboard Need Upgrading?

Many older Sydney homes have a switchboard that's near capacity even before an EV charger. Signs you'll likely need a switchboard upgrade include a board packed with no spare ways, rewireable fuses instead of circuit breakers, or no main switch and RCD protection.

A modern board gives you the space, the dedicated circuit, and the safety devices the charger needs. It also future-proofs the home for other big loads like ducted air conditioning or a second charger.

When Your Supply Isn't Enough

Sometimes the switchboard isn't the bottleneck — the supply feeding the property is. If your existing single-phase service can't comfortably carry the charger alongside peak household demand, you may need a supply upgrade, potentially to three-phase.

Upgrading the supply and the connection to the network is Level 2 ASP work — it involves the consumer mains and the physical link to Ausgrid, Endeavour Energy, or Essential Energy. A standard electrician can install the charger itself, but not the network-side upgrade that sometimes has to come first.
