EV Charger Installation: Do You Need a Level 2 Electrician?

EV charger installation itself — running the circuit and mounting the unit — is typically Level 1 electrician work. But a growing share of installs stall at quoting stage once it's clear the existing supply can't support the charger without upgrading first.

When You Only Need Level 1

If your switchboard already has sufficient supply capacity and available circuit space, installing a home EV charger is a standard Level 1 job: a dedicated circuit is run from the switchboard to the charger location, with appropriate circuit protection.

When You Need Level 2 First

If your switchboard is at or near capacity, especially in older homes on a standard single-phase supply already running ducted air conditioning or electric hot water, a fast EV charger can push demand past what your connection can safely deliver. This is where a switchboard upgrade or three-phase conversion — genuine Level 2 ASP work — becomes necessary before the charger can go in.

Multiple EV chargers at a strata property or commercial site almost always require a Level 2 assessment of supply capacity and often a dedicated network connection upgrade.
