If you've been told you need a Level 2 electrician for a job and you're not sure what that actually means, you're not alone. It's one of the most misunderstood licence types in the industry, and getting it wrong can mean delays, defect notices, or work that has to be ripped out and redone by someone properly accredited.
The Short Answer
A Level 2 Accredited Service Provider (ASP) is licensed by the NSW government to perform electrical work directly on the electricity distribution network — the infrastructure that belongs to Ausgrid, Endeavour Energy, or Essential Energy, not the property owner.
A standard electrician (Level 1) is licensed for everything on your side of the meter: powerpoints, lighting circuits, switchboards inside your home. A Level 2 ASP works from your meter *outward* — overhead service lines, underground consumer mains, private power poles, and the physical connection between your property and the grid.
What Falls Under Level 2 Work
In practice, this covers new overhead mains and underground mains connections, service line relocations, private power pole installation and replacement, metering upgrades including smart and solar metering, network disconnections and reconnections, and rectifying Ausgrid or Endeavour defect notices.
Anything that involves physically connecting to, disconnecting from, or modifying the network side of your supply requires a Level 2 ASP. A standard electrician is not licensed to touch this infrastructure, even if they're happy to quote it — doing so is illegal and dangerous.
Why Accreditation Matters
Level 2 ASPs are individually accredited by each network operator — Ausgrid, Endeavour Energy, and Essential Energy each run their own accreditation scheme with ongoing audits and compliance checks. This isn't a licence you get once and keep forever; it has to be actively maintained.
Sydney Power Group holds current ASP accreditation across all three NSW network zones, meaning we can legally carry out network-side work anywhere from the Eastern Suburbs to Western Sydney without handing a job off to a subcontractor in unfamiliar territory.
