Solar Installation Mistakes: The Electrical Side Nobody Quotes

Mistake 1: Assuming the Switchboard Is Solar-Ready

The inverter needs its own protected circuit and space on the board — and many older Sydney switchboards have no spare ways, no safety switches, and older backing panels that may contain asbestos — which means work on the board can't proceed until the panel is assessed and handled or replaced in line with asbestos safety requirements. Any of these can stop a solar installation at the switchboard until the board is brought up to scratch.

The fix is sequencing: assess the board *before* the solar contract is signed, so any switchboard upgrade happens first (or on the same visit) instead of stopping the job. The switchboard quiz gives you an early answer.

Mistakes 2–3: Forgetting the Meter and the Export Rules

Metering left unscoped. Exporting solar requires a bi-directional meter; older meters must be exchanged, and if the meter board needs work to take the new meter, that's extra scope nobody quoted. Sorting the metering alongside the installation keeps switch-on on schedule.

Ignoring export limits. Networks set limits on how much a system can export, and larger systems may need approval or export limiting. Discovering this after the system is sized means either paperwork delays or a system that can't do what the sales quote promised. The network application belongs at the start of the project, not the end.

Mistakes 4–5: Supply Capacity and the Battery Afterthought

Not checking the supply when solar is part of a bigger plan. Solar rarely travels alone — it usually arrives with an EV charger, induction or a heat pump close behind. If that's the trajectory, size the supply question once: our home electrification planner stacks it all up, and a three-phase conversion considered now may be cheaper than two rounds of upgrades.

Treating the battery as a plug-in extra. Batteries have their own switchboard, protection and location requirements, and retrofitting one to a board that was only just adequate for the inverter means paying for board work twice. If a battery is in your two-year plan, say so when the solar is scoped.
