Bi-Directional Meters for Solar: Everything You Need to Know

Solar installers handle the panels and inverter, but the meter that measures what you export back to the grid is Level 2 ASP territory — and it's a legal requirement before your feed-in tariff can be activated, not an optional extra.

Why a Standard Meter Won't Work

A standard analogue or consumption-only digital meter only measures power flowing in one direction: from the grid to your property. Once you add solar, power flows both ways — you draw from the grid when your panels aren't generating enough, and you export surplus back when they're generating more than you're using.

A bi-directional meter measures both directions independently, which is what allows your retailer to calculate your feed-in tariff credit and your actual consumption charges accurately.

Net Metering vs Gross Metering

Most residential solar in NSW operates under net metering, where your solar generation offsets your consumption in real time before any surplus is exported and credited. Gross metering measures all generation and all consumption separately — less common now, but still used for some legacy systems and specific commercial arrangements.

Export Limiting

In some Ausgrid and Endeavour Energy zones, network capacity constraints mean solar systems are approved with an export limit — a cap on how much power can be fed back to the grid at once.
