Where solar savings really come from
The biggest factor in solar savings isn't the panels — it's how much of the generation you use yourself. Self-consumed solar replaces grid power at the full rate, while exports earn only a few cents. That's why a battery, roof orientation and even when you run the dishwasher change the answer as much as system size does.

How much can solar save on a Sydney power bill?
It depends on system size, roof orientation, shading and — most of all — how much of the solar you use directly. Power you self-consume is worth the full grid rate (~35c/kWh), while exports earn only around 5c/kWh. That's why two identical systems can save very different amounts on different homes.
Is a battery worth adding to a solar system?
A battery stores daytime solar for the evening, typically lifting self-consumption from around 30% to 60% or more — which is where most of the savings come from. Whether the extra hardware pays for itself depends on your usage pattern and tariff, so treat any battery savings figure as an estimate, not a guarantee.
Does roof orientation matter for solar in Sydney?
Yes. North-facing roofs produce the most over a year in Sydney. East and west roofs produce roughly 15% less but spread generation into morning and evening — which can actually improve self-consumption. South-facing roofs produce noticeably less and usually need a larger system to compensate.
Do I need my meter changed when solar is installed?
Usually yes. Solar requires a bi-directional smart meter so exports can be measured, and the connection has to be approved by your network (Ausgrid or Endeavour Energy in Sydney). We handle solar metering and network connection paperwork as part of our Level 2 work.
Can my switchboard and supply handle solar and a battery?
Older switchboards often need upgrading before solar or a battery can be connected safely and to standard, and larger systems may need a supply upgrade or three-phase power. A licensed electrician confirms this during a site assessment.
