How to Choose a Level 2 Electrician in Sydney

By Sydney Power GroupPublished 9 April 2026 7 min read

Choosing the wrong Level 2 electrician can cost you a lot more than money — unaccredited network-side work can be rejected by the distributor, leave you with a fresh defect notice, or simply be dangerous. Since not everyone who advertises 'Level 2' work is actually accredited to do it, here's how to make sure the person you hire is the real thing. If you'd rather just deal with a properly accredited team, that's what Sydney Power Group is.

Check They're an Accredited Service Provider

The single most important check is accreditation. A Level 2 ASP is individually accredited by the network operators — Ausgrid, Endeavour Energy and Essential Energy — to work on the network side of your meter. This is separate from a standard electrical licence.

Ask which network zones they're accredited in and confirm the accreditation is current. Accreditation is audited and must be actively maintained, so it's not something an operator can claim once and coast on. If someone is vague about their ASP status, treat that as a serious warning sign.

Sydney Power Group holds current ASP accreditation across all three NSW network zones, which means we can legally carry out network-side work anywhere from the Eastern Suburbs to Western Sydney.

Confirm Insurance and Compliance

Any electrician working near live network conductors should carry appropriate public liability insurance and workers' compensation. Don't be shy about asking for evidence — a legitimate operator will provide it without fuss.

Ask how they handle compliance paperwork too. Network-side work must be notified to the distributor and the correct completion documentation lodged, and a defect can only be officially cleared with the right paperwork. An operator who is casual about this can leave you technically non-compliant even after the physical work looks done.

Proper insurance and compliance cost money to maintain, which is part of why the cheapest quote isn't always the safest one.

The Right Questions to Ask

Beyond accreditation, ask practical questions: Will you provide a written, itemised quote? What's included and excluded? Who pays any network fees? Will the distributor need to attend or schedule an outage? What's the likely timeframe? For more, see our list of questions to ask a Level 2 ASP.

Ask how they handle unexpected issues — for example, if a rotten pole footing or a non-compliant switchboard turns up mid-job. A good operator will explain likely contingencies up front rather than springing variations on you later.

Also ask about warranty and what happens if the work doesn't pass network inspection. Confident, accredited electricians answer these questions plainly.

Get a Proper On-Site Quote

Because Level 2 work depends so heavily on site access, existing infrastructure and network coordination, a reliable quote comes from an on-site inspection or at least clear photos — not a firm price rattled off over the phone.

A written quote lets you compare operators line by line. When you compare, look at scope, not just the total: a cheaper headline price that omits switchboard compliance or reinstatement isn't actually cheaper. Read our guide on what a Level 2 job costs to understand the drivers.

If a quote is vague or verbal only, ask for it in writing. If they won't, move on.

Red Flags to Walk Away From

Be wary of anyone who can't confirm current ASP accreditation, quotes a firm price without seeing the job, wants full payment upfront in cash, or can't provide insurance details. A price dramatically below every other quote is often a sign of missing scope or missing accreditation.

Other red flags: reluctance to put anything in writing, no fixed business address or ABN, and pressure to decide on the spot. Network-side electrical work is not the place to take a punt on the cheapest operator you can find.

Reviews and local reputation help. An established Sydney ASP with a track record across the Ausgrid, Endeavour and Essential zones is a safer bet than an unknown quantity.
