Air Conditioner Not Cooling? Safe Checks Before a Repair

When an air conditioner stops cooling, the cause is not always obvious. A setting, blocked user-accessible filter or obstructed airflow may be involved, but electrical, control or refrigerant faults need proper diagnosis. These checks can help you describe the problem without opening the equipment.
Check settings and airflow first
Confirm the controller is set to cooling rather than fan or dry mode, the set temperature is below the room temperature, and any timer or schedule is not preventing operation. Check that supply outlets and returns are not covered by furniture or curtains.
If your model has a user-removable filter, inspect and clean it only as described in the manufacturer's instructions. Daikin's filter and energy-saving guidance recommends regular cleaning for its systems; follow the manual for your own make and model.
Record what the system is doing
Write down the make and model, any error code, when the problem started, and whether it affects one room or every indoor unit. Note whether the outdoor unit appears to run, whether the issue is constant or intermittent, and whether heating works normally.
For ducted systems, note which zones are affected and whether airflow differs between outlets. For multi-split systems, note which indoor heads are operating. These details help a technician plan the assessment.
When to switch it off and book a repair
Turn the system off if you notice a burning smell, visible damage, water near electrical equipment or repeated circuit trips. Do not keep resetting a circuit breaker or remove equipment covers. Refrigerant checks and repairs should be left to appropriately licensed personnel.
NSW Government guidance explains that air-conditioning and refrigeration work requires the relevant licence or certificate. Refrigerant handling also has separate ARC licence types. Sydney Power Group provides licensed air-conditioning repairs across the region.
