Air Conditioner Filter Cleaning and Routine Maintenance

A clean filter and clear airflow are simple parts of air-conditioner care, but cleaning a filter is not a substitute for every type of maintenance. The right service interval depends on the model, how heavily it runs and the conditions around it. Use the manufacturer's manual as the guide for your equipment.

Clean only the parts the user manual identifies

Many systems have user-accessible filters that can be removed and cleaned without opening the equipment. Switch the system off and follow the manufacturer's instructions for removal, cleaning and drying before reinstalling the filter. Do not force clips or use cleaning products that the manual does not recommend.

Daikin's energy-saving guidance recommends cleaning its indoor filters every two weeks during use. That interval is brand guidance, not a universal rule: check the instructions for your system and inspect more often if the manufacturer recommends it.

Keep the airflow path clear

Keep indoor outlets and return-air grilles clear of furniture, curtains and stored items. Outside, keep plants and loose debris from blocking the outdoor unit's airflow, while observing the manufacturer's clearances. Avoid opening electrical covers or spraying water into the unit.

If filters are clean but airflow remains weak, temperatures are uneven or the unit makes an unusual sound, arrange a service assessment rather than assuming another filter clean will resolve it.

What professional servicing can check

A technician can check system operation, airflow, controls, accessible components and condensate drainage, with the work adjusted to the equipment type and service history. Any refrigerant work must be completed by a person with the appropriate refrigerant-handling licence.

Keep a note of the model, filter-cleaning dates, operating hours and any recurring fault. Sydney Power Group services split, ducted and multi-zone systems across all brands. NSW's air-conditioning and refrigeration work guidance explains the relevant licence requirements.
