Most Sydney homes run on single phase power, which is plenty for everyday living. But as households add ducted air conditioning, EV chargers, pool heating and workshops, single phase can start to strain. That's when three phase power comes up. Because connecting three phase involves work on the network side of your meter, it must be carried out by a Level 2 ASP like Sydney Power Group.
Single Phase vs Three Phase
Single phase power delivers electricity over one active conductor, and it's what supplies the majority of residential properties. Three phase delivers power over three active conductors, staggered so that power is being delivered more smoothly and in greater total capacity.
The practical difference is headroom. A single phase supply is typically limited in how much load it can carry at once, whereas three phase spreads a much larger load across three conductors, so you can run multiple heavy appliances simultaneously without overloading.
When You Actually Need Three Phase
You don't need three phase just because you've added a few appliances. It becomes worthwhile when you have genuinely high or concentrated demand: large ducted air conditioning systems, fast EV chargers, workshop machinery, commercial kitchen equipment, or several of these running together.
Some appliances are only made in three phase versions, which forces the decision. If you're planning an EV charger and a big aircon at the same time, it's worth checking capacity before you buy — see our notes on EV charging.
Benefits Beyond Capacity
Three phase can run certain motors and equipment more efficiently and with smoother operation. It also gives you more balanced loading, which can reduce the flicker and voltage dips that sometimes come with heavy single phase loads.
For most families the main benefit is simply future-proofing — installing capacity once so you're not upgrading again in a few years.
Getting It Connected
Moving from single to three phase involves the network connection, metering and often a new switchboard, and the connection itself is strictly Level 2 ASP work. We handle the network connection and the board in one coordinated job. To talk through whether three phase is right for your property, call 0466 125 125 or book a free on-site quote.
