Signs Your Consumer Mains Need Replacing

By Sydney Power GroupPublished 30 April 2026 5 min read

Your consumer mains are the cables that carry power from your point of attachment or metering point through to your main switchboard. In older Sydney homes they're often undersized, corroded, or simply worn out — and because part of this work sits on the network side of the meter, replacement usually needs a Level 2 ASP like Sydney Power Group rather than a standard electrician.

The Warning Signs to Watch For

The classic symptoms are lights that flicker or dim when a big appliance kicks in, safety switches that trip for no obvious reason, and a switchboard that feels warm to the touch. You might also notice discoloured or brittle cable insulation, a faint burning smell near the meter, or brownouts that affect the whole property at once rather than a single circuit.

Many older properties still run undersized VIR or single-insulated cabling that was never designed for modern loads like air conditioning, induction cooktops and EV chargers. If your home was built before the 1980s and the mains have never been touched, they're worth having assessed.

Why Ageing Mains Are a Real Risk

Consumer mains carry the full current for your entire property, so when they degrade the consequences are serious — overheating, insulation breakdown and, in the worst cases, fire inside the wall cavity or meter box. Undersized mains also cause voltage drop, which shortens the life of your appliances and leaves you with an unreliable supply.

If you're planning a switchboard upgrade or a three-phase supply upgrade, the mains almost always need to be checked and often replaced at the same time, since a new board is only as good as the cable feeding it.

Overhead vs Underground Mains

Replacement looks different depending on how power reaches your home. Overhead mains run from a pole to your point of attachment and are exposed to weather, tree contact and UV damage. Underground mains are protected from the elements but can be damaged by excavation, root intrusion or ground movement.

In both cases the section from the network to your meter is Level 2 ASP territory. The cabling from the meter into your switchboard — the consumer mains proper — also needs to comply with current standards when it's upgraded.

When to Call a Level 2 ASP

If you're seeing any of the warning signs above, don't wait for a failure. A Level 2 ASP can inspect the mains, confirm whether they need replacing, and coordinate any required disconnection and reconnection with Ausgrid, Endeavour Energy or Essential Energy.
