As a general rule, the network owns the poles that run along the street and carry supply through the neighbourhood. Anything past the point where supply crosses onto your land to serve only your property tends to be private. The pole that exists purely to get power the last leg to your building is usually a private pole that you own.

The clearest signal is purpose: a pole feeding multiple homes is almost certainly the network's, while a pole that feeds only your property, especially one set back from the street, is likely yours.

How to Tell the Difference

Location is the first clue — poles on the street verge are typically network-owned, while poles inside your boundary are typically private. Network poles usually carry an asset number or tag and often support street infrastructure like public lighting or connections to several properties.

A private pole tends to stand alone on your land, feeding a single point of attachment on your home. Rural blocks, long driveways and battle-axe blocks very often have one.

Why It Matters

If the pole is the network's, you report faults to Ausgrid, Endeavour Energy or Essential Energy and they maintain it. If it's private, the responsibility — and the cost — is yours, covering the pole, the overhead mains it holds and the attached hardware.
