The meter box is one of the most argued-about items in any build or renovation — because the NSW Service and Installation Rules are strict about where metering equipment can go and who must be able to reach it. Put it in the wrong spot and the distributor can refuse to connect you.
Where a Meter Box Is Allowed
For a house, the rules allow the meter box on the front face of the residence, on a side wall within 1.5m of the front, or built into the front boundary fence. The unifying principle: the meter must be readily accessible from the street side without entering private living areas.
Access must be kept clear at all times. A meter behind a locked gate or fence is only acceptable if an approved locking system is fitted so authorised meter readers and network crews can get in.
Where It Can't Go
The rules list unsuitable locations: places where access is restricted for health or security reasons, fire-isolated stairways and corridors, and carports or similar spaces without specific permission. In units and townhouses, metering must sit in an accessible area on common property — not inside an individual lot.
The rules also cover locking: service enclosures must be kept locked with an acceptable system, and network locks can't be used on enclosures containing your private equipment.
Moving or Upgrading a Meter Box
Renovations, front-fence rebuilds, carport additions and switchboard upgrades all commonly force a meter box move. Relocating metering isn't just carpentry — it involves the consumer mains and the network connection, so the electrical side is Level 2 ASP and metering-provider work.
It's also the ideal moment to fix everything at once: a modern enclosure, smart meter, safety switches on every circuit and space for solar or EV circuits later.
Plan the Meter Location Early
If you're building or renovating, lock in a compliant meter position at design stage — retrofitting one after the distributor rejects it is expensive. For meter relocations, upgrades or a compliance check, call Sydney Power Group on 0466 125 125 or book a free quote.
