How Long Does a Switchboard Upgrade Take?

By Sydney Power GroupPublished 9 April 2026 5 min read

One of the first questions Sydney homeowners ask about a switchboard upgrade is how long it will take and how long they'll be without power. The honest answer is that it depends on the scope — a straightforward board replacement is very different from an upgrade that also involves the consumer mains or a new network connection. Here's what shapes the timeline. For a firm estimate on your job, talk to Sydney Power Group.

A Straightforward Board Replacement

Where the existing mains and connection are sound and only the board itself is being replaced with a modern one fitted with safety switches, the on-site work is usually completed within a single day.

The power is typically off for a portion of that day while the old board is removed and the new one wired and tested. We plan the outage so it's as short and predictable as possible.

When It Takes Longer

Timing stretches when the upgrade includes more than the board. Replacing degraded consumer mains, relocating the board, upgrading from single to three phase, or coordinating a metering change all add time. If you're not yet sure your board needs replacing at all, our 60-second switchboard quiz is the quickest way to find out.

If the work involves the network side of the meter — a new network connection, a service upgrade, or a supply upgrade — the network operator's scheduling becomes part of the timeline, which is why early planning matters.

What Affects the Schedule

Beyond scope, timing is influenced by network approvals and appointments, metering coordination with your retailer, access to the board, and the condition of what we find once the old board is opened up.

As accredited ASPs across Ausgrid, Endeavour and Essential Energy, we manage the network coordination for you rather than leaving you to chase separate trades.

Minimising Downtime

The best way to keep the outage short is a proper on-site assessment beforehand, so materials and approvals are ready and there are no surprises on the day. We'll give you a realistic window and keep you informed throughout. To book an assessment, call 0466 125 125 or book a free on-site quote.
