What Happens During a 200A Supply Upgrade?

By Sydney Power GroupPublished 5 May 2026 5 min read

As households add ducted air conditioning, EV chargers, pools, and home offices, standard 63A or 100A single-phase supplies increasingly can't keep up. A 200A upgrade is the most common fix — here's what actually happens on the day.

Why 200A

200A has become the practical benchmark for modern residential supply capacity, giving enough headroom for high-draw appliances running simultaneously without nuisance tripping. It's also frequently required by air conditioning installers and EV charger manufacturers as a condition of installation. Pools and spas are another common trigger — the pool & spa power checker shows whether the pumps and heating you're planning fit on your existing supply, and if you're going further and taking the whole house electric, the home electrification planner stacks up induction, heat pump hot water and EV charging in one pass.

The Upgrade Process

We start with a site assessment to confirm your existing consumer mains cable can carry the increased load — if not, a consumer mains replacement is completed as part of the same job. A network application is lodged with your distributor to authorise the capacity increase, followed by installation of a new switchboard rated for 200A with compliant safety switches on every circuit.

The outage required to complete the physical connection change is coordinated with your network operator and typically lasts a few hours, scheduled to minimise disruption.

Timeline

Most 200A upgrades are completed in a single day once network approval comes through, including the switchboard replacement, metering reconnection, and compliance certification.
